The Pirts Ritual

The Pirts is the Latvian sauna tradition — one of the oldest healing practices in Baltic culture. It is not simply a matter of heat. A Pirts ritual moves through carefully sequenced stages: warming the body gradually, a scrub, cold contrast, rest, whisking with bundles of birch, oak, or whatever the season offers, a honey massage that draws impurities from the skin and leaves the body deeply nourished, and a final cold plunge. Each stage has a purpose. The order breathes — Rihards reads what the body needs in each moment and adjusts accordingly. Together the stages work on the body and nervous system in a way that is difficult to describe and immediately felt.

What makes a Pirts ritual different from a sauna session is the presence of a trained guide — in Latvian, the pirtnieks. Rihards holds the ritual from beginning to end, reading the room, adjusting the heat, timing each stage to what you actually need that day. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is performed. You are held in a space where the only requirement is that you show up and let it work.
